    Noble set the record in 1983 with Thrust II (633mph) and then
    his team (Green driving) set it again with Thrst SSC (766) in 1997.

    No one else broke his first one before the replay.

    So:- He has quite a history of the completely pointless.

    I read Noble's book on the SSC and while Thrust II was just
    a quick hack, some real development went into SSC. They
    apparently discovered that Thrust II was a very small
    margin slower than Vr[1] when they decided they had done
    enough. Some of the team wanted another run and if they
    had done one they would have been going for an air speed
    record in addition to the LSR already achieved. I forget
    who said no.
