I was visiting the in- laws (84y and 79y) this weekend so I persuaded them to watch it with me. They were both enthralled. That kind of stuff makes F1 look very tame indeed.

No one knows. The riders themselves haven't been able to explain it either. Rossi started it several years ago, but Stoner does it too (only on one side, tho), and a few other riders, across the classes, have taken it up. Theories abound. The most likely one to me involves using body weight on the iniation of the turn, not unlike what people do with a dirt bike.
Standard practice for some motard riders in hill climbs, but not at those speeds. Looked like the back wheel stepped out a tad to me and he had a 'dab' - but from what you say he and others do it pre-emptively IYSWIM.
