Seems that a rider who crashed into a wire rope barrier near Devonport
suffered such gruesome injuries that witnesses to the crash have been
    offered free counselling.

Officers labelled the crash the worst they had attended due to ... the
horrific nature of the man's injuries. In an unusual move, police have
offered counselling to drivers who witnessed the crash as well as
emergency service workers. He said police usually only offered
counselling to family members but due to the severity of the crash felt
it was important to consider the wider public.

I am really dubious when the police report "high speed" incidences
and don't give an estimation of the speed.

I don't know about Tasmanian police, but SAPOL like to boast (in
    their
wipe-off-5 propaganda ad's.. which are making the rounds again)
about how accurately they can calculate vehicle speeds in accidents.

What do they call "high speed" anyway ? 1 kay over the limit ?

I dunno that road but if it 100 kph then I'm sure that riding into the
slice-and-dice even 1kmh UNDER is gonna' be bad news!!

The counselling may just involve one of those memory devices on Men In
    Black..

How fast was he going for the bike to slide another 214 meters? Surely
the bike wouldn't have slid that far if he was only doing 110kmh.
I feel for the Family & witnesses, But I con't condone exccesive
speeding either. And nor do I agree to WRB being used.

I had an off at about 120kph and the bike ended up about 200 metres from
where the off began... not necessarily sliding all the way, but in the
case in Devonport they'd probably be measuring from the first sign of
loss of control to the final location of the bike. You wouldn't imaging
it would be sliding all the way either.. even at 100kph the bike is
going to travel a fair way in an 'out of control' state before it even
    begins to slide.

The sides of a motorcycle have a quite low co-efficient of friction
compared to rubber under brakes ! Depends on what bike it was but 200
meters is quite possible from less than 100K particularly if the road
    was wet.

I had an off at 30-40K and the bike slid well over 50m before it
collected the gutter (wet bitumen, grabbed a handful of front at age
16 on Ls and went arse over)

And who says the bike SLID 214 metres? It may still have been on its
wheels for some part of that distance before falling over.

Remember the bike at PI a few years ago running upright and riderless
down the main straight in flames before it went rubber side up?
Admittedly it did bounce off the pit wall, but it stayed on its
    wheels.

Shit no ! I write off a bike about every 3 days when it rains. It's
getting a bit dear after all these years though.

What do you think I should have learnt ?

  14. Been offline at home for a while and can't be fucked usenetting at
work as it is too hard.

But I was at Joe's Garage last night with the President of the Tas
Motorcycle Council. It was his bucks night, getting married for the
second night, silly bugger. Anyhoo, we had been discussing Brifen the
day after this accident and Shaun had been on page 3 of the Mercury
plugging the case for how nasty they are. I've been pushing it down
here for years, especially when working on 3D visualisation of new
    developments for our roads department.

I also use to work with both the head of the Road Safety Council here
(Paul Hogan) and the Minister for Roads and Transport (Jim Cox). In
fact Jim Cox and I used to play silly buggers in high powered cars
    around Lonny years ago.

Anyway, I don't think trying to pull in favours is a good idea or
would ever work anyway, but this is the first time in the 20+ years
that I felt I had to write an email to Jim Cox pleading for some
sanity. This guy ended up in small pieces over quite a stretch of
road. Yes, you are going to be in trouble at 100 km/h and yes, I am
pretty sure from knowing that bit of road that he would have been
going a lot harder than that. I certainly would have been.

So do we have the death penalty for a moment of stupidity or youthful
recklessness? What is the cost to the witnesses and emergency workers
and society for the trauma of having to pick up sliced up human
remains. Apparently this one was fucking horrific.

I don't think we are going to win though, that's what shits me.
