(although I suspect that even you might pick the SV650 over a CBGZXR600 to
go for a tootle on if they were sitting in the carpark side-by-side)

But surely it's a few models old now; how can you live with it when the new
one has more power, lighter weight (or is "heavier" weight a selling factor
with 'Wings?) larger brake-pistons, less unsprung valve-caps and upside-down
    radio-aerial?

Mate; you're foolin' yerself if you think you're happy!

Sorry, but that's an utter, total and absolute relic of the mid 80's of
a viewpoint, formed at a time when motorcycle manufacturers where still
learning what works and consequently making lumpy progress; the new bike
might've had sharper brakes and more power than the old bike, but the
repositioned crank affected stability for the worse, and so on, making
it at least plausible to brand attempts at progress as being change for
    change's sake.
It's called progress. I may well only get a new bike every few years,
but it's nice knowing that what I upgrade to will be newer in terms of
    engineering, not just chronology.
Indeed. All you have to do is capture the market segment which buys into
the whole "intangibles" bollocks and you can plough your entire profit
margin into country club memberships for the board of directors instead
of having to actually fund some real R&D. Not only that, but you get to
charge more for your bikes than the competition to begin with.
    On the $70,000 Internet-purchase-only 998R in 2002, sure.

Tokico did in on the $14,000 ZX-6R and the $17,000 GSX-R1000 in 2003.
Yes. Larger throttle body area for less overall width of the whole bank.
Nope, actually. Try as I might, I can't even find instances of it being
used on F1 cars (they might've skipped them and gone directly to
racetrack-cross-section venturi with ported-cylinder throttles). It
looks to be a genuine first for Kawasaki (on the current ZX6).
Sucking molten alloy into a mould at a variable rate to vary its density
and composition along the length of a component to give local control of
stiffness etc; quite exquisite and, in all likelihood, much more of a
bugger to get right than bending up some chromoly tubing.
Well, not quite. Mostly, they borrowed from Nico Bakker, and a lot of
their ideas were bigger false starts than anything the Japanese tried
(eg. the straight headstock-to-swingarm-pivot frame beams on the SB6R
    doesn't actually achieve anything structurally)

And good riddance to them. Frankly, it takes a special kind of cheek to
charge upwards of 20 grand for a 600 on which the bars foul the (loose)
air ducts before the steering lock can be engaged.
In that case, stop trying to rationalise this. Just come out and say, "I
just don't like them, OK?" That would be honest.

The rest of this is starting to read like you've lost touch with the
developments taking place and have resorted to shooting them down as
irrelevant and soulless by way of a defence mechanism...

Strange how you don't seem to do it for contemporary music, possibly
because you listen to Triple J. Wonder how much your tune might change
is you actually rode something modern.

Gary Woodman is grumpy aready, refitting the gearbox today :-( The $2.40
spring has gone up to $3.50 :-( :-( :-( But I found Coopers Pale at
$11.49 around the corner from Rolfe :)
Absolutely, pretty breathless after that though. 25 years on, they still
surprise Gixxers and Dukes in the twisties :)
    Maybe next week :)

Gary (double grumpy, the only newsreader in Ubuntu is Thunderbird :-(

  7. services are easy (must book it in for another!).

That IS easy...no fishing the 'dropped it cos it was hot sump plug out
    of oil drain pan' needed

OH, but that means going to a bike shop...a thing I do less often than
    going to a computer shop

Don't tell me I've run out of CDR's AGAIN!

  10. (And I haven't ridden an R65 but at the risk of getting Gary Woodman grumpy
I tried an R65, but was WFO during an overtaking manoeuvre...and I
thought "there would be nothing left at highway speed on this thing"

At least ancient glodwing WFO is about 220 [1][2]

[1] there are no more numbers after that on the round thing

[2] when it points to '180' the 'big perspex thing you look through'
starts flapping in the breeze and 'comfort factor' is exceeded

I have no qualms about working on my 25 year old bike.

But I get the shakes checking windscreen washer fluid level on a seven
    year old car.

  13. What, just a change of barrels turns it from a "Bavarian Gentlemans
    Tourer" into an "Italian Superbike"?

big (Now Moike's claims make much more sense...)

When my son bought his Merc the Merc people told him he was only allowed to
touch the things under the bonnet that were yellow. The only yellow thing
under the bonnet turned out to be the cap on the windscreen washer fluid
reservoir. For everything else there was the mobile and the service number.

No way, think what that would cost in ground clearance! If you want a
larger/faster bike, it's much easier/quicker/cheaper to just buy one.
    I'll have what he's having!
