    Criteria, in no particular order:

    Cheap
    Red
    Cheap to insure
Safe (relatively to keep swmbo happy, I guess that means an airbag or two)

    Suggestions please, anyone got anything?

Not red and somewhat premature, as we've not found a new car yet, but
with a bit of luck in the not too dim and distant future -
    Fiesta 2000 W Reg 1.25 Ghia (e.g. aircon) 5 door 90k fsh metallic
green. Some rust and needs a bit of tlc. Driver and passenger airbags.
Need to check prices but I guess a bit under a grand.

I trust she's buying it, taxing, moting and insuring it out of her own
pocket. When she crunches it she'll understand how expensive they
    really are.

Of all things, The Doctor's mother's Vauxhall Corsa will be up for
    grabs soon.

She bought it shortly before she died. It's a 2000 2-door model 1.2
Envoy automatic, so no ball of fire, but (get this) it's as new. When
she bought it, it had just 178 miles on the clock. It's now got about
    1500. Garaged.

Bloody difficult thing to value: I mean, what price an as-new old
Corsa? We were reckoning two grand. Maybe a tad more if a 40k mile Y
    reg Ka is £1800?

    Oh, it's silver, btw.

You're not wrong re the insurance. Just for a laugh I checked on
confused. With me as the main driver, prices start at 1,147 and go up to
    an eye-watering 4,630.

TPF&T gets it down to a mere 844.

That appeared to be very expensive to me.

That sounds about right. I remember insuring a N-Reg Rover 214Si
TPF&T (might have been TPO) for something around £500 when I was 22.
It went down around £100 when I did a PassPlus.

V has one. Hateful, hateful thing. Doesn't feel even vaguely safe
either. And that's the top-end one with all the toys.

In this case I could quite legitimately be the main driver, at least for
the first year or so. I think the decreasing premium (age, and may pass
    plus) outweighs the ncb, iyswim.

  14. Yes a freind of my daughter did that , had a crash and the insurance company
refused to pay out for the damage to her car and took action against the mother
and daughter to recover the costs of the third party damage , and other losses

Had a Clio with that engine: bullet-proof. 113k? just about run-in then :)

Well, I've already got a 1.9 diesel Clio, but I've a feeling that engine
size makes the insurance even more astronomical for a learner. Bit of a
joke really because it's not exactly fast. I will check though.

np you weren't to know. I just checked with my existing broker,
actually a new policy would only be 600 for that car, so I might go with
    that.

Unfortunately, there's no such thing as cheap insurance for yoofs anymore
    (if there ever was)
