No thinking about it Simon. With the prices for a young driver being what
they are, and a young driver STAYING a young driver until they turn 26, it's
a no-brainer to go with the "main and 2nd driver" thing.

V has one. Hateful, hateful thing. Doesn't feel even vaguely safe
either. And that's the top-end one with all the toys.[/QUOTE]

I've had a rental one. It was horrible, but not as horrible as the
    underpowered Yaris.

Try Admiral, but not through Confused, make it in her name with her as the
main user, but add yourself as another driver. My Clio V6 was group 20R,
and when I added my dear old ma on, as she might have needed to drive it if
I was ill or whatever and we were wanting to get home from hosptial, it
knocked a full £400 (actually, it might have been £600, I can't quite
remember) off and got it down to £850 FC, me at 24 with 3 years NCD from a
Motability car. Perfectly all a-ok legal wise [1] and a nice saving to
    boot.

With regards to the cars, a ball-park budget would help people recommend
stuff :p She'd probably like a Ka, hunt for a luxury spec to get full
leather and A/C etc, they're much more pleasant inside than the poverty
ones. They have a reputation for really fun handling though, of course she
won't care about that but they're also group 1 to 2 insurance, available in
red and also nice and slow :) Watch out for rust on the early ones though,
and make sure the A/C works if you do go for a Luxury.

Other options though, Micra or Yaris would be nice and reliable and just
keep going but may have slightly higher maintenece an insurance costs. If
the budget is more, a C1/107/Aygo - all the same car, the Citroen is the
cheapest, make sure you get one with the 4 speaker stereo upgrade, or she'll
be bugging you for a better she can actually hear with the engine on ;-)

[1]despite the fact the chances of me letting a 53 year old woman who likes
to drive fast have a spin (pun noted) in my mid engined, short wheelbase,
rwd, 230bhp car with no panel cheaper than a grand to source being rather
    remote heh.

It's the single most hateful vehicle I've ever driven.

And my first car was a Metro.

Is the V5 you found the old-style one that you've kept, rather than
    destroying, when you received a new-style V5?

So you actually sent the new-style V5 with your change of address, and
subsequently received the reminder letter and got a new tax disc.

Alternatively: the gnomes did it while you were sleeping.

For me, that would have to be the Fiat panda, or a Lada Niva.
Heh, I like those, and I had 2 Minis.

In response to the O.P. i'd suggest a Renault Clio. Much, much better
than the Ka, or any small Ford (e.g. Fiesta)

You know, that thing is still going. I bought it in 2001, it's still
on its original tyres and battery, and it just refuses to die.

Out of all the old shite i've owned over the years, I reckon this is
the one vehicle that owes me the least, as i've literally driven it
    into the ground.

This said, It really is a shed though, and draws admiring glances from
    all who encounter it :)

    Cheers,

    Paul.

Heh, well spotted on that typo. I of course meant the Lada *R*iva, not
    the Niva.

I had two brand new ones die on me as I drove them to Russelsheim.
These were Vauxhall's own vehicles collected almost directly off the
IBC Dunstable production line and registered the morning I collected
them. On both occasions I had to abandon them unrepaired at Opel
dealers and hire cars to get me there. One of the dealers couldn't loan
or hire me a car so I ended up in a rental Honda Accord Estate. This
did not please the Opel management at Russelsheim who I had gone to see
    on business.
