  3. Most of them have long since ceased going.

    Try www.electrexworld.co.uk

They have a painfully fucked website, though.

Some useful info on all GS electrical stuff...

I may have one for a GS550E but, oddly, it doesn't seem to be listed
    above.

  8. Frankly, I'd be surprised if all those bikes used the same shite
alternator as the GS range. Sure that's not the reg/rec listing?

Another thing to watch out for on the GS alternator - sometime around
1980 they changed from a 12pole to a umpty um... anyway, there was a
pole number change and you must fit the relevant rotor to match it.

Ah yes, yet another thing... a rotor can be fucked, yet pass all the
static multimeter tests until you're tearing your hair out wondering why
    the thing won't work.

  9. Stator, ffs , stator.

  10. yep. I'm trusting the builder knows what he's saying and tested that,
    but you never know.

First thing to do is change the Reg/Rec for a superdream one anyway,
that should be printed in the owners manual.

I have both types of stator so it shouldn't be a problem.

The bike is a GL US import engine.

Know anyone who wants to buy a 16" rear wheel and bevel box ?

You never know with alternators; it could go either way.
