Hmmm no fair. Why's my Bandit 600 so uneconomical? My commute's twice as
far and I'm only getting 36mpg. When I started in May it was costing me
just under £15/day, now it's gone up to £17. The off peak travelcard is
£23 so the bike isn't looking quite so attractive any more. The bike's
supposed to do closer to 50mpg, wassupwirrit?
Yeah the B6 is about as small as I'd want to go I think.

I'm in Switzerland at the moment where the trains are marvellous even
if a lot of them are very, very busy. This despite them being either
very long and / or double deck. Oh and this public transport stuff
does work if people put their minds and money to it.

    Two possible answers:
    a) clean out your air filter, change the spark plugs, adjust carbs
    b) stop hooning and start riding like a granny :)
My mileage improved significantly after installing a new air filter and
changing spark plugs to new iridium ones.

Your mileage, of course, may vary.

You are most likely using too much low gear. Nice to have lots of
acceleration ready at a tweak of the hand but fatal for fuel economy.
Keep the revs right down until you actually need them, it makes a
    big difference.
The GS500 easily achieves 70mpg by pootling at around 4000rpm and
taking a more laid back less aggressive riding style.
The power is still there when needed, a few pokes at the gears and
    away to go.

  5. You're using it in heavy traffic and not getting it into the higher
    gears. Duh.

Hmmmm. Not convinced. I took the Pan today, filled up before I set off
and the fuel gauge barely moved. S'got a huuuge tank comparitively I
know, but. Gonna give it a good service this w/e and have a peek inside
the carbs. It had a splutter at 4K revs which according to google can be
solved by lifting the needles a tad. Well I did that, seemed to be
better, but now it's still got a splutter at 4k. So I'll put the needles
back, new air filter, plugs, valves, carb balance and we'll see how that
goes. It's got an aftermarket slightly noisy exhaust on it too, so it's
possible some previous owner fiddled with the jet sizes.

We keep meaning to try that as we can hop on at Tame Bridge Parkway.

And an *all* Switzerland railpass is £340 a month. I think this
will include local busses and trams (except nighttime)
and there are various discounts on mountain
    transport (skilifts) etc.

Indeed. I blame the last but one owner. I've even tried keeping to legal
speeds but that makes no difference. The other difference is I have
about 15 miles of really heavy traffic, but I don't think it should make
    that much difference.

That would be the last one to actually ride it, yes? You cnut
It only cost me about the same as the Sprint doing the Marlow run.

That sounds like something's wrong. My spanky new B1250 is giving a
200 mile tank range for me on a 75 mile round trip, which is 50-odd
mpg. Costs about 30 quid a week in fuel.

  15. Try Bath to London; just under 8k a year.

  16. The fares are a result of the popularity of train travel; it's simple
market pricing. I wouldn't expect any less from privately held
companies- they're in business to make a profit after all!

You can normally travel for half the headline fare (or less) if you
don't insist on travelling on an open ticket at peak times.

    As an example;
Bath to London open return is £148.
Choose off-peak times (such as arrive at 10.40, leave after 6.30) and
the price goes down to £59.
Buy a few days in advance and fix the fare then it goes down again,
    often to sub £40.

Or, if you must travel at peak times play games around booking a journey
from Bath to Didcot return and then Didcot to London return and you can
travel at peak times for around £80 (without needing to leave the
train). Take a little more trouble and you can get this down further if
    you fix your times.

I almost hate to admit this but I am considering using the train more
this winter; my last three commutes to London have been hateful; solid
traffic from Reading to Paddington (virtually) resulting in risks being
taken (because I've refused to leave home before 7AM...) and then
bottling out, parking at Heathrow and taking the HEX in at a cost of 32
quid return. Much easier to cough up 50 quid and arrange my diary
    appropriately.

I know more about the railway booking system than I ever thought I
would. Used to spot trains, now I spot fares. Sigh.

You want a Thundercat, you do.

45mpg when ragging the tits off it everywhere, so far.

When I finally get round to not constantly ragging the tits off it,
I'll work out what it averages in 'sensible mode'.

I seem to recall a report from a Government think tank a while back
which determined in view of the higher costs of public transport these
days, travelling under ones own wheeled steam was now too cheap, not
that public transport was pisstakingly too dear.
