Xmas comes early, it lives and TOG takes the biscuit.

So I took the plunge and ordered an ultrasonic cleaner off Ebay from
'China'. Not only did it arrive within a week (in a box from a warehouse
in the south of England), but it works.

Stripped down the CB250 Nighthawk carb again. Filled the tank with a
litre of Clean Machine parts cleaner and two of warm water. Put the jets
and other small items in the natty round fine mesh basket and the float
bowl and body in the larger mesh basket along side. Twenty minutes at 30
    degrees.

Shinier than very shiny things they became. Squirts of carb cleaner in
to orifices had very promising results. Put it all back together and
pressed the button. Sounded better straight away. Even without the air
cleaner back up it will rev freely with part choke. Won't rev it too
hard until I have changed the oil.

So a biscuit to TOG - yow wos roit!

Do I need to adjust/check the cam chain tensioner, and if so how?

So Fisher's Fastidious Carb Cleaning service is open for business. Note,
however that it will only take one smallish carb, so no four cylinder
banks I'm afraid. It will however, take the carb/FI bodies off any of my
fleet plus any number of other smallish components. Chuffed I am.

Here is the beast in an unnatural habitat (it is aimed at the dentistry
    market).

What are the internal dimensions? I have been thinking about getting one
myself but I am not sure what size to go for.

  3. Told yer ;-)

Got the auction details for the machine you ordered, btw? I might get
    one.
IIRC, they're fully automatic on those things. Ask a Honda dealer. They
*might* be like the CD200 benly: semi automatic. If so, there'll be a
protruding thingy and a nut on the back of the block, and all you do is
    undo the nut and re-tighten.

    <Checks online parts fiche>

    Looks fully auto to me.

I assume it would take a Morini Dell'Orto?

Oh indeed so and I shall be treating the old spare 25mm jobs I have.
Also will take the carbs off the GFR an YZs. I hope never to have to
fiddle with the Voxan Magnetti Marelli throttle bodies. One of the
Nordwet Keihin smooth bores would have gone in, perhaps both still
linked but not fully submerged. The Teikei would have been a squeeze,
but Simon has got that now ;-)

I see there are two power output types, both 5L.

Cheapo ones are 120W ultrasonic module, expensive ones are more than double
at 300W for only £30 or so more.

I went for a 300w unit, but also one that clearly stated UK voltage. It
came with a continental two pin power lead, but as it is a standard
'kettle' type connection at the box I had an old PC monitor lead lying
    about.

I'm not sure if the lid needs to be on other than keeping in the heat
(goes up to 80 degrees but I only went to 30). With it off larger things
could be turned after a bath IYSWIM.

.... or, stick a screwdriver in the earth pin of the socket to open the
shutter, and bung the two-pin power connector in the now-open holes.

As long as you're not trying to clean the mains lead, you should be okay.

So long as you do the stripping down and re-assembly. Not keen on
borking other folk's threads and fiddly bits, though Dellorto VHBs are
very simple in comparison with the complicated little Keihins. I'd try
not to lose any pingfuckits. In fact you probably only need to have the
body ultrasonically cleaned on one of those as the jets are pretty
simple to check. I suppose I could offer an exchange service at least on
the body. Are you still on alloy intake elbows?

Otherwise, you would have to be quick unless you can wait until after
half term. Then there is the postal strike to consider, or were you
thinking UR, possibly via a Stafford Show attendee?

Wassat and where do you get it from then? I tried all sorts of
concoctions and ended up with just water in mine in the end.

I hope yours last longer than the Chinese ones I had. I burnt through
two of them before I ended up buying a rather more substantial unit.

Ah, memory burp, forget the 'Clean Machine'. It's one of the Autoglym
range available from Halfords. I've also got a can of Gunk 'Green' in
    reserve.
You probably give them more intensive use than I ever will.

    Try again.

I didn't use them that much. They all have timers IIRC. I had a set of
carbs from a SOHC 750/4 that I cooked quite a few times in my efforts to
get it to run better. (It's still not 100%). According to when I looked
into it lots of people had problems with the transducers if they weren't
careful with the duty cycle. At least the (ebay) supplier I used gave me
    my money back.

Don't think I could get a bank of four carbs in mine at the same time.
Thanks for the heads up on the possible problems. I must resist cleaning
every small oily part in sight for the sake of it.

I didn't get the whole bank in assembled - they were stripped down as
    small as they would go.

The bike's still not 100% (or the last time I tried it, it wasn't). It
ran not bad, but rich. Mpg was awful. Some of those internal passageways
seem next to impossible to clean out. I've been wondering about trying
to remove all the little brass plugs from them (maybe by getting them
    really hot).

Look, will you stop it already?

I've got absolutely no reason to own one, all I'd do with it would be to
chuck various things in there and see what happened (PCB, would it take the
solder off and unsolder everything? Egg, would it break down the shell? My
fingers, would it clean under my fingernails *really really* well?)

No end of stuff went in, and proportionally interesting results came
