XS650 sorted

  1. One new camshaft oil seal, one gasket, one O-ring (total cost less than
a tenner), and 40 minutes' work, most of which was cleaning off the old
    gasket.

    And I have a no-longer-incontinent XS650.

An' it's gorgeous. Even Timo was impressed. Mind you, as he's ridden it,
that now means a blow-up is imminent.

I think it would be great to take it to Chimay next year....

I doubt you'll have it then.

  3. Well.... I know exactly what you're saying.

I stuck it on Ebay, as you know, and then changed my mind. Something
else is likely to come along between now and next July, so on that
count, yeah, I'd cash it in and take the wedge.

OTOH, I *love* these bikes, and this is the best one I've seen in years.
Timo will vouch for that. So it might wind up like the 400 Four -
restored, sorted, intended to be sold, and seven years later I still
    have it.

Yes, I was quite impressed with it. *Especially* when it appeared to
contemplate if it would start again, ever, after I'd ridden it around
    the block.

I do like it, but to me it felt pretty close to the CB450 so I could
    actually keep my wallet shut...
Sounds like the perfect bike for that...

    Is it for sale then?
Can I build a cafe racer from it?
    How much is it?

**** that. I put a Dunstall half fairing, Dunstall Decibel silencers,
clip-ons and rear sets on my original 650 Yamaha and it looked ok once
it was painted black. I really wanted a 5 gallon alloy tank for it but
could never find one cheap enough for my meagre apprentice wages.

Bollocks, it looks "camp as a row of pink tents full of men fucking".

  10. Hmm... I think an alloy tank would be wasted on mine, given the possible
weight savings would be utterly pointless in comparison to the rider.

It wasn't the weight I was interested in, it was the fact that
    polished alloy tanks looked good.

I saw a norton framed ali tanked cafe racer style bike at kempton park
once. GSX1100 engine (air cooled one) and fireblade forks, swingarm,
shock brakes and wheels. It was a shame that they wanted more than I
was willing to pay for it 'cos I thought it looked amusing.

WC, Muck and I saw a Gixer 1100 engined Norton wideline framed cafe
racer at the Ace Cafe about this time last year. It looked quite good.

I'm with you on that. The normal version looks loads better.
