Saw one in a local bike shop at the weekend. It looked rather fun.
Perhaps I was won over by the lush Ohlins shock they had bolted to it.

Are they any good or it is basically a reworked XT600?

Myself and a pal bought XT600Es in 2003. Excellent bikes for back roads and
simple off road stuff. On back roads the XT is perfect - I use a lot of
petrol during the evenings at this time of year thrashing the XT round the
lanes (here in Mid Wales). Lowish weight and big handlebar leverage make it
    very controlable.

Pal marshals mountain bike events and wanted something more off-road
specific. He swapped his XT for a 2003 TTR600 that had been little used as a
    demonstrator.

It's quite a different bike. Alloy wheels - a big plus. More power - lovely.
Lighter - another advance. The only downside I found was that at higher
speeds on the A roads the different steering angle makes the bike a bit
twitchy. Thrashing it round back roads or along dirt tracks it's in its
element, better than the XT; but its a lot dearer, so it should be.

The 2004 XT660 seems to be a waste of space for anything other than roads.
Two exhaust pipes exit under the bash plate and a great big water pump
housing sticks out in a perfect position to hit a rock lurking in the side
    wall of a rut.
