  3. Betty, first up best wishes for your recovery. You may well have some
very dark moments following this elation, be prepared to seek help
    immediately should this occur, please.

What I have to say next is a more general discussion, so please skip
    it Betty!

OK, the bad news is that headline sentences of 37years for rape are
BAD BAD BAD for women. Any rapist out there now has to be thinking
very seriously about rape/murder, rather than letting the victim live.

The advantages to the perverted animals that do this stuff now seem
    obvious:
    1. The sentence for murder is probably going to be LESS than 37 years
    2. Hiding of evidence will be easier (no witness to tell the story)

Much as I would like to join the pack mentality, I can't help but
think there HAS TO BE a better way. Of course the very best solution
for my mind is prevention, find out who these men are and analyse WHY
they do it. Maybe we can catch them early. Is there one or more common
denominators? single parent families? alcohol abuse? abuse of animals?
can we profile individuals for treatment BEFORE they get to the serial
    rapist stage?

Failing that can we rehabilitate them rather than throw them into a
24/7 criminal environment to hone their bitterness and skillsets? 37
year sentences certainly have a great revenge factor, but as to
discouraging rapists, I dont think so.

I hope this post will met met by at least some insight, rather than
200 haters baying rethoric. It's a big, big problem people, let's be
adult and work on the solution.

That is assuming that the rapist commits their crime based on the expected
punishment he or she may receive if caught. In my limited experience of
crims, that is a very unrealistic assumption. Especially if you're talking
    about Crystal Meth addicts.

Can't say I've tried either, but I reckon murdering someone and hiding the
body wouldn't be that easy (unless you travel regularly between Alice
    Springs and Broome that is).

    (and women)
Kill them all, and those immigrants to. It's all their fault you know.

Hmmm ausmoto may be 'life as we know it' but I can still see a certain doc
saying "He's dead Jim!" about here at times :)

Gee, thanks for the insight and the advice.
Erm, no. Don't tell me what to do and don't think you know better than
I do what I can cope with reading. I hate that sort of paternalistic
    bullshit.
Not for the young girls and women in a community who've been raped and
cut by some piece of shit - and not for the rest of the women in the
community who've felt like prisoners in their own home for months on
end while said piece of shit is still on the loose. And not for the
families of all the women in the community - the fathers, husbands,
sons who feel the fear and feel helpless to do anything about it while
said piece of shit is on the loose.
No, any rapist is probably still thinking he (or in some cases, she) is
smart enough to evade the law and not get caught. And of course, all
rapists are different. Have you thought about that???
Actually, I think that there might be rapists out there who haven't got
enough brain cells to think so analytically.
Common denominator? Don't give me that shit! That's playing right into
the simplistic manipulative crap that said serial rapist tried on the
court. ALL RAPISTS ARE DIFFERENT. Listen, Borked Psycho whoever the
**** you are, live in cloud cuckoo land if you like, because I think
that's where you are - but a nasty reality is that shitty circumstances
in one's life do not necessarily create a potential criminal. Lots of
people come from single parent families. Lots of people have shitty
childhoods. Lots live in families where alcohol abuse is rife. Gee,
I've probably described an enormous slice of the population! How many
of them become serial rapists? Very very very few. Your dangerous
argument is one step away from eugenics.
Yes, let's be nice to them. After all, they're just poor misguided
individuals who get a sick kick out of terrorising women and leading
them to believe they are about to die, just so these poor misguided
pieces of shit can feel powerful. Rehabilitate them? Yes, great idea -
but punish the arseholes at the same time, for ****'s sake! I'm not
terribly sure where you come from, but one of the good things about
being locked away here (apart from having a toaster if you behave
yourself) is that there ARE programs that attempt to treat such
"perverted animals" so that they don't reoffend later.

    37
That particular sentence wasn't intended to discourage any OTHER
rapists - it was intended to punish the particular arsehole who raped
and tortured several girls and women aged from 14 to 46 IN THEIR OWN
HOMES, often while their parents/flatmates were in the house. He did it
    over a period of 3 1/2 years.

A 37 year sentence may not discourage a potential rapist - but it will
make sure that a particular rapist is not out there in the community to
do it all again - for 37 years (non-parole 25....) And that, I have to
tell you, gives a bit of breathing space to a community.
Gee, once again, thanks for your advice. Now I think I'd like you to
    **** off.

    betty, adult, strong, pissed off.
