    The Quota Lives!

The black Terror of the Highways runs.

Apart from a flat battery it started relatively easily, too.

Pity I can't tax the fucking thing. My new-style MOT, which expires in
mid July, 'not found' according to the DVLA website. No way to enter
the document number manually, of course.

The DVLA online system, when it works, is great. IME a lot of the time
it doesn't and it is fucking useless. Snarl.

Top work mate. Did you ever find the cause of the 'nip-up'?

    Ta.

As to the cause, I still don't know. Fuel pump, filter & pressure reg
seem OK. Fuel system holds its pressure well and the old fuel filter,
now replaced, flowed well. Haven't checked oil pressure yet, that
might take a bit of effort. The few oil galleries that I checked
seemed fine. ECU error codes are as per usual [1]. The other cylinder
was fine with barely a hint of wear; compression was excellent.
Igintion timing's common to both and anyway, it's fixed.

I'll do a plug chop or maybe use a Colortune to be sure the LH
    injector's not partially clogged.

Beyond that: dunno. The LH cylinder (the one that seized) internals
certainly appeared to be rather cleaner than the RH ones, as if it
    were running leaner or hotter.

[1] When the battery's in anything other than perfect condition, like
now, the ECU displays codes 3.2 and/or 3.3: TPS &/| APS fault (I
forget which is which). This is interesting in that both are powered
by the same 5V excitation. It's done this ever since I bought the
bike. The manual mentioned spurious codes, which is probably why the
error codes aren't enabled by default.

Bad fom an' all, but my final reckoning is that the seizure was down
to me not tightening the spark plug properly. The plug worked loose
and then overheated and caused pre-ignition. The plug shows clear
overheating symptoms; classic melted side electrode with aluminium
fouling and blistered porcelain nose. I was worried that it might have
been a blocked injector, but it's been fine these last three hundred
    miles.

I've never heard of this happening before, but apparently it can:

Dim memories of plugs needing to dissipate heat to the cylinder head
    have subsequently surfaced.

  7. It happened to Hog's RD400 when Loz was riding it back, too.
