New exhaust valves + guides + carb. balancing - the R80 feels like a new
bike. Did 100 miles of beautiful Somerset lanes yesterday evening.
    Brilliant.

I know it's not a Trident or whatever, but it so rarely all comes right
I just had to let off steam...

"Yeeeha" yep that sums it up.

Imagine, if you were a mechanic you could get that sense of satisfaction
    everyday

  3. I reckon my R60 needs new guides - burning a bit of oil on e one side,
recently. Shouldn't be rings, as it had new rings on both sides not that
    long ago.

Guides were IIRC around 7UKP each from Sherlocks, plus 2UKP each for
fitting by a local auto-engineers. I got them to re-grind all the seats
& inlet valves & lap all, incl. the new exhaust valves too. They charge
    2UKP per valve per process: guides; seats (grind); valves (grind);
    lapping.

Total cost around 150 - 100 was parts (exhaust valves are heading for 30
each - shudder to think what the local BMW agent would charge).

I'm jolly glad they're 42mm and 38mm (exhaust). I was putting the valves
back after cleaning with my 12-year-old 'helping', got distracted, and
fitted a new exhaust valve into an inlet sleeve. Only noticed once I'd
removed the spring compressor! It jammed down in the inlet (interference
fit!), and was gently tapped loose with a copper mallet. If I'd done it
with the one of the later 40mm exhaust valves I'd have ruined both valve
& seat. Happily it was fine once put in the correct hole.

All that careful labelling of bits and I still managed it - spot the
    twit!

Changed the throttle cables too. I *did* get these from BMW agent. Turns
out that LHS one is about 1" longer than RHS (officially). The RHS one
has a short white sleeve at the carb. end, presumably so you didn't get
    them muddled whilst fitting.
