    Some very lucky bikers:

    Marin Independent Journal

Bikers skid off cliff, but are rescued
    By Gary Klien
    IJ reporter

Thursday, August 05, 2004 - Two motorcyclists were injured last night
after losing control of their cycles and going off a steep cliff in
West Marin, police and firefighters said.

"These are two lucky individuals," said county fire Capt. Tom Nunes.

The crash was reported at 6:51 p.m. on Shoreline Highway, according to
the California Highway Patrol. The motorcycles were heading north when
they lost control on "Borello's Curve," which Nunes described as a
well-known bend in the road about four miles north of Point Reyes.

The motorcycles skidded off the highway and went down a nearly
vertical cliff. One of the riders was able to block his fall and
scramble back up to the road, but the other plunged 35 feet down and
slammed into a tree, breaking a thigh bone.

"He hit a four-inch branch on the tree and broke the branch," Nunes
said. "We believe that's what broke his leg."

No police helicopters were available for a rope rescue, so county
firefighters descended the cliff as night was falling. They loaded the
motorcyclist into a rescue basket and pulled him up to the highway
around 8:30 p.m., according to CHP reports.

A medical helicopter landed at a private ranch nearby and flew the man
to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital. He was in stable condition and never
    lost consciousness, Nunes said.

The other motorcyclist suffered minor injuries but declined medical
treatment at the scene. The names of the motorcyclists were not
    available.

One lane of Shoreline Highway was blocked for nearly two hours during
    the rescue effort.

    The crash is under investigation.

  3. But the real lesson is...
A real friend never gets in your way... even when you are on the way off
    a cliff...

  4. that happened to me once...

riding south of Westport on Hwy One, on my trusty old '67 Suzuki X6 Hustler.

I'd had a flat (loonnnnggg story) in Eureka and had to replace the tire, all
that was available was an enduro tire (rear)

not much tread on the edges....

baking around a corner south of Westport, and zip! the rear end goes out and
I am sliding off the road. I went off the only place where there is a
field, not a cliff. Shot through a bush, and slid down the field aways.
When my knees stopped chattering like castanets, I picked the bike up and
    rode on out of there.

    Very lucky, yes.

that was a heck of a bike.

Hey! I saw Biker Boyz and Torque (I like the conversing casually
while in full face helmets driving 90 and bouncing a 400 pound
    triumph off a palm tree).

I know about you wild ass bike racers.

    You're trouble, I tell you. With a capital T.

Well, zero is a number. Then again, how do you tell the difference
between 'motorcycle races' and a bunch of speeding riders? This may not
be an irrelevant question: I heard that vehicles involved in racing on
public roads are now subject to confiscation.

How do you know they aren't?
    So there!

Since they BOTH rode off the road, and the
news articles don't mention any other possible
cause, my bet is they were squiding.

    Second rider to police:
"Well, he told me to follow him home. When
he rode over the cliff, I thought: he must live
down there, so I followed him".

After careful consideration of all the facts, a search of all
records pertaining to the incident in question dating back
to the early 1900's, subsequent to exaustive questioning
of their families and friends, plus rigoruous investigations
of their backgrounds, my educated, reasoned conclusion is:

    GUILTY, GUILTY, GUILTY!!!!!!

    of squidliness.

However, Larry, I'm willing to hear your arguments to the contrary.
    What do you think happend?

  11. You're the one who drew the conclusion.
Why not this scenario: Both riders unfamiliar with the road. First
rider is surprised by the degree of the turn and in a panic reaction,
runs off the road. Second rider target-fixates on the first rider and
without realizing it, follows him off the road.

    It happens.

I did not draw that conclusion. I jumped to it.

    Everybody...
    A squiding we will go
    A squiding we will go
    Hi-ho the derry-o
    A squiding we will go

    Now just Denise...
    They squided off the road
    They squided off the road
    Hi-ho the derry-o
    They squided off the road

    Now just the squids...
    Yes we are a squid
    Yes we are a squid
    We squided over the cliff
    Because we are a squid

    Now just Bozo...
    I've never been a squid
    I've never been a squid
Well, maybe just once or twice
    But never off a cliff

  13. It's one thing to show a person that he might have jumped to a
conclusion it's quite another thing to put in his possession the facts
before the investigation... if riding takes 400 decisions per mile...
you can still get into trouble executing 399 of them and failing a
single decision like lean the bike over hard and mean it...

From the American Motorcyclists Dictionary (AMD)

    Main entry: squid
    Pronunciation: 'skwid
    Function: noun
Inflected Form(s): plural squid or squids
    Etymology: origin unknown
: any of an order of riders that believe their
formidable skills, real or imagined, make them
impervious to the usual and common dangers extant
when riding well traveled, curvy public roads.
A rider doing so on a road on which he has
never before ridden is sometimes called a King-squid,
or in the motorcycling vernacular, a dumb-ass.
