It's a remote island community and if they want to keep it mono cultural
and maintain SO then I have no problem with that. Head to France and you
find most places closed on a Sunday. I'd be quite happy to see retailers
here required to close once again, despite the spurious arguments it's
rather shite for the employees.

 

Depends on the employees and market sector. Back when I was a
supermarket chimp, the Sunday shift was almost exclusively staffed by
students who were more than happy do it. A tenner an hour to sit on my
arse and wave things at a barcode scanner?
The only non-students were whoever was supervising checkouts that day,
and management. And I had no sympathy for the managers, esp. the
Alfa-driving ones.

I've no issue at all with places being open on Sundays, so long as they
pay enough to make it worthwhile for the employees. Not everybody
*wants* to spend time with their family at the weekend.

 

I don't give a shit about the employees, I just wish to **** that I
could do even some basic shopping on a Sunday. Not even DIY shops are
open, which completely sucks, as there's **** all else yopu can do on
a Sunday. Even mowing the lawn's not allowed.

Depends on what you mean by "most places". Restaurants and bars and
cornershops and the like tend to be open, which is enough to get by.

Too noisy[1], disturbs the neighbours. But it's banned on principle,
not just if you have an especially noisy mower.

[1] Although why they could just put a proper silencer on the thing I
don't know. A 400-cc single isn't inherently quiet - I always wear ear
defenders when using it.

And, as Ogden says later, lots of people do want to work it.

Our central heating went bang on saturday afternoon, and I was
lucky enough to be able to trace it down to a fault room unit /
programmer type thing. Typically all of the places that could
supply me one were either closed for the weekend or only
half day saturday, so we spent a couple of chilly night waiting
for the plumbers merchants to reopen. A simple swap out which
took all of 2 minutes and we were warm again.

I'm surprised that the PC lot haven't jumped on the sunday
trading laws yet as being "anti-minority faith", or something.

a Saturday/Sunday job at all the local supermarkets for over 9 months.

ah, well we have a 24/7 call-out deal with British Gas for that sort
