I'm leaving myself open to flames here, as I know what you lot are
like, but **** it - here goes.

Those of you familiar with the ongoing situation regarding Richard
Hammond's accident will be aware that Yorkshire Air Ambulance were
responsible for getting him to hospital in a timely fashion. Many of
you live in the area covered by the YAA, and many more pass through
that area quite often. It's nice to know that it's there if we need
it; like everything else, however, it costs. These costs are largely
    met through donations.

As a result of the publicity surrounding what happened, someone (not
me) has set up a web page -
    http://www.justgiving.com/PHRichardHammond?page=1#donationtable
    - where people can make donations to the Yorkshire Air Ambulance
    should they so wish.

I am not saying that you should make a donation. I am posting this
simply so that if you feel like it, you know how to do so. I am quite
aware that even the most charitably-minded person has priorities, and
may decide that other causes are more important to them. You might
simply prefer to keep your hard-earned cash for yourself, and good for
you if that's the case. You've earned it, and therefore it's entirely
your right to determine its eventual disposition. Do as you see fit.

    Dixi.

Or, alternatively, donate to the Air Ambulance that serves your area,
you never know when you might be in their capable hands, the cost of
keeping this (un-funded) service in the air is obviously not cheap.

Well, some say it goes back to Leonardo. Really, it all got going with

Through donations, they are not funded by the Gubmint, nor receive cash
in the same way that the other emergency services do. The fact that
they are a registered Charity should be a rather large clue..

    http://www.yorkshireairambulance.org.uk/

NWAA was lucky enough to receive a donation from someone who left
enough cash in their will in order to replace the old Helicopter with a
newer one, but it still costs a heck of a lot of money to keep them
    airborne.

I can assure you I will not be donating any money to an *essential*
    [2][3] service.

I can assure you I will be writing a very stern letter to my local
political representative. If I can find out who my local council
official is they'll be getting an earful too.

This public service announcement has been brought to you by a bottle of
Hardys ooomah and some strange spanish wine with a plastic bull tied to
it's neck which I can't quite remember the name of. Oh yeah and I'm now
officially 40 years old which makes me an officially old grumpy git.

As somebody else said in this thread, it's almost inexplicable that such an
important emergency service is entirely funded by donations because the
    gubmit won't.

One of the blokes who was interested in my GS was working with/for the
London air ambulance and when we were trying to arrange to meet, he didn't
know if he would be working because it depended on their ability to rent a
chopper or not. To me that's a scary thought...

"Supporters of the presenter appealed for help raising the £340 it
cost to ferry him to hospital."

I kind of assumed he'd pay it himself.

Or, alternatively, move to a less pikey country where air ambulances
don't need to be funded through public donations. I much prefer the
idea that I pay for such services through my health insurance (or my
company's accident insurance, in the recent case) in the same way as
all my other medical services are than that it should be funded
    through charitable donation.

In the UK, you're caught between a rock and a hard place, with NHS
funding being such a contentious issue, but really, however the health
service is funded should be sufficient for _everything_.

Nah. It was Icarus, although if they had had an air ambulance about at
that time he might have survived to warn us of the dangers of playing
    with hot things.

    The usual Meeja spin.

We did it to cheer up the hamster and help a very worthy cause. It seems
    to be going quite well

Just over 34,000 pounds now, including the 28% we've managed to snatch
    back off Gordon Brown.

Apparently he smiled yesterday when Clarkson said he was there in hospital
because he is a crap driver. :)

While agreeing that the government should fund this service itslef, I
have to admit that this is the real world and if we want it, we should
chip in. And you never know when you might need the Air Ambulance
yourself, so I've chipped in a couple of bottles of decent claret's
    worth.

    Nice one, Alex & Co.
