Ooh, while you're here - quick question.

My guppies have been getting it on and now I've got 6 fry, about 3 weeks old
and 10mm nose-to-tail. They're in a little plastic fry tank floating in the
main tank. I'm off on holiday for a week soon, the main fish will be OK
with the electric feeder, but the fry obviously won't get their baby food.

I'm not convinced they're big enough to survive in the main tank just yet,
so I was actually wondering whether I should take them with me in a
cleaned-out jam-jar. I'm staying in a rented house in Cornwall, so I'll be
able to put them somewhere warm enough, and was just planning to take the
baby fish food and a small bottle of tap water conditioner, and change half
    their water once.

Is this likely to work, or should I just leave them to their own devices for
    a week?

    Cheers

so I'd heard. Good enough bone structure, though.
you've not seen her recently, then? Looks like someone who works in a
    chip shop.

I've thought of another for me, mind: Kirsty Wark.

Can you anchor the fry tank close enough to the feeder that some food
wil drop in? 'Swot I did for baby mollies and they seemed to get enough
    food.

I've got one on order at the LFS - they didn't have any in when they were
born, so I must drop by and see if one's arrived. In the meantime I've been
lifting the plastic tank up once a day so that most of the water drains out,
and then letting it sink down and re-fill in order to get some sort of water
    change going.
1 Redtailed black shark, 1 Female fighter, 1 dwarf neon rainbow, 1 albino
    corydoras, 4 guppies and 3 Endlers, 2 swordtails, 5 harlequins, and 5
    neons/cardinals. I've got a bigger tank now.

    Oh, and 2 Rams :)
OK, I was hoping that as they were so little I could get by by changing the
    water 2 or 3 times.
I might do that then - one holiday stick in the net trap and then the
automatic feeder dispensing flake to the big fish. They usually get fed the
powdered baby food but I've tried them with a bigger lump of sinking food
and they seemed to get the idea that food can come from below as well as
    above!
Yep, they had a change this weekend and got another planned for Thursday
    evening

    Thanks, as always

Ok, sorry in advance for the long reply...

    1) Plastic breeding traps are pretty crap long term, as they don't allow
adequate water flow and can cause the fry to be stunted or deformed. If
you plan on raising them on for a longer term, get a net breeding trap
    (usually about £3.15).

    2) If a guppy fry can survive the first 24 hours in my tank, it's then
usually big enough to avoid being eaten - well that was the case until I
bought a pair of rams purely to keep the guppy population down. (My fish
deliver approximately 150 fry per month).

Please could you remind me what stock you have in your tank at the
    moment?

    3) The fry will die unless they are kept in a filtered tank with an
established filter. (remember that the bacteria in the filter convert the
ammonia in the fish waste through nitrite and into nitrate) AAMOF I doubt
the fry would survive the journey to Cornwall.

    4) 1 day old guppy fry will survive happily on finely powdered flake
food, and it won't pollute your tank like the liquifry food will. Either
get a second automatic feeder and put in finely crushed flake, or buy
some Tetramin holiday sticks for tropical fish. The tetramin sticks are
far better than the holiday blocks - I wouldn't use a holiday block in
any of my tanks even if you paid me to!

    5) I suppose the short answer is: Get a net breeding trap, some tetramin
holiday sticks for tropical fish and put them in the breeding trap (2
sticks should suffice for a week), and stick in a small amount of plant
e.g. cabomba, elodia or floating water lettuce. The fry will pick at the
    plant too.

Final bit of advice - do a partial water chane before you go, and another
one as soon as you get back. If you have an RCD on the tank electrics,
take it off before you go - I forgot to remove mine, and we had a power
cut while we were in Cornwall resulting in 3 of the tanks having no
filtration or heating for 4 days.

If you have any other questions, give us a ring on Chris's mobile number,
    or email me direct.

IMHO but the bunches make early morning watching more bearable. In the
same mould Charlie Robinson from the Aussie show Hi-5.
