Stoner named Young Aussie of the Year
    Friday Jan 25 18:50 AEDT
It was just three months ago that Casey Stoner zoomed down the straight of
Phillip Island on the back of a shiny red Ducati motorbike and became the
    MotoGP Champion of the World.
Now he has taken out a much more sobering award - Young Australian of the
    Year.
The 22-year-old has been working towards his motorcycling victory since he
    could walk.
He first rode a motorbike at the age of three and started racing when he was
    just four years old.
By the time the young revhead was 14 he had won 41 dirt and long track
    titles and 70 state titles.
But Casey had then outgrown motorbike racing in Australia as he was too
young for road racing. But not in Europe.
The Tamworth family packed up and took a huge gamble on Casey's formidable
skills, heading to Europe where they all helped kick-start his international
    racing career from a caravan.
Now less than 10 years later, the young boy from country NSW is married, at
the top of one of the most glamorous sports and riding on the back of a
machine that makes millions envious all around the world.

I have to agree with JustAl - why ? I'm a big fan of Casey but the guy
who was runner up organised the "make poverty history" concerts. The
young australian of the year seems to actually mean "young sportsman of
the year" I can't remember when a sportsperson hasn't won it.

Organising a one-off series of concerts that hasn't really done jack
shit to solve its core problem, versus years of ceaseless dedication and
sacrifice to rise to the world top of a highly competitive sport and
providing an inspirational example to people around the world and across
all age groups...hmmm, can't see why that's worth a mention myself either.

But if you have a better candidate...who are they, what have they
actually done, why is it so noteworthy, and why does it make them more
deserving of recognition than any other person?

  9. Australian of the year should be , IMHO, an award to recognise service to
the community, Casey while undoubtedly a great champion and sporting
ambassador has really done it all for, not Australia, but Casey. An effort
truly deserving of the Moto GP's No.1 plate but not, perhaps "Young Aust. of
    the Year.".

How about "the person who has done the most to promote a positive-image of
    young Australians to the world".

<shrug> Sure. Good on him and great for motocycling etc, but I still
don't get how it's invariably sportsmen that get the gong

So you're saying that he's an absolutely shit role model for the youth
of Australia and deserving of no recognition simply because he might
have profited from his hard work?

I'd say he's a fantastic role model to our youth, a great example to
them (and to older people as well) that if you truly believe in
something, and work your arse off to achieve it, you might just make it
after all. Or is that not the example you want our kids to aspire to?

So who do you propose instead then? The only justifiable grounds for
opposing one candidate is the belief that a better one missed out. So
who are they, what did they do, and why are they more deserving?

Why should it be Casey's fault or problem if no such better candidate is
present to receive the award instead?
