Young rider insurance

    Ok so I am about to do my CBT in the next few weeks and decided to get an
    insurance quote for a motorbike if I decided I wanted one at the end of the
    DAS. I got a quote at random for a Honda CBR600 although I don't know
    anything about it. The quote was £2500. Is this a particularly expensive
    one to insure? I am 23 with 3 points and 1 accident (car). I don't think I
    would want to pay more than £500 on insurance, what kind of bike could I
    insure for that and what kind of performance would it have?

    Also I am rather clueless as to how fast these motorbikes are - I couldn't
    find any top speeds or acceleration figures on either the honda or the
    yamaha websites. I have a renault clio 1.2 and that takes about 12 seconds
    to go from 30-70mph! How would this compare to a five grand bike?

    £500 quid insurance gets you quite a small slow bike. But it'll still
    be faster than most cars on the road.

    Really your best bet is to be looking at 500/600cc 'naked' bikes.
    These are bikes with little or no plastic fairings on them. Because
    they're not full on sportsbikes, like the CBR6, they'll be slightly
    cheaper to insure and they'll be easier for a newbie to ride.
    However, if you're looking at spending 5k on a bike, you'll be looking
    at an insurance bill of around 1k fully comp.
    heh, 5 grand bike, that covers an awful lot of bikes. Ok, take mine
    for example. By the time your Clio is doing 70, I'm doing 170 and
    still accelerating.

    At least. Even the naked bikes are still > group 8 - a Hornet or a SV650 are
    not that cheap to insure.
    Especially at 23, with new licence and an accident - I struggled to get
    insurance on the SV and that was without the accident.

    It's a Sports 600 - group 14 insurance, compared to (for comparison only)
    your Clio at group 2.

    Not really.
    Do you want fuly comp? If so, IMO, you're going to be _extremely lucky_ to
    get < £500 on anything with a greater then 125cc engine that's
    vaguely decent.

    Try CIA insurance - they gave me a quote when no one else would at the same
    age :)
    Go to a shop, buy any one of hte motorcycle magazines there and you will
    find all the answers.

    It sounds like you're purely interested in the performance, which is fine,
    but you seem surprised that this performance costs something. Insurance is
    high because people crash the buggers, or because the insurers think they
    are likely to :)

    Why not do your DAS and see how you feel at the end of that - it might help
    you decide.. You also need to take into account other costs
    such as servicing - bikes can be expensive in tyres and require services
    every 6 months or 4000 miles in many cases.

    Protective gear, should you chose to wear it, is also not cheap.

    Not for that type of bike
    Well, my Ducati Monster 600 cost somewhat less than GBP400 IIRC. (TPFT)
    OTOH I was 31, no no claims but a pristine licence
    Ho ho. The Monster above cost 3.5k I think. Regarded as a slow bike, with
    gentle power delivery and suitable as a first 'big' bike. There was a piece
    I read somewhere that the 0-60 time of 4.1 seconds put it right up against
    a McClaren F1. 30-70 would be slower, but I would be rather surprised if it
    was more than half what your Clio does it in. Can't remeber what the Triple
    figures are, but quite a lot faster springs to mind.

  7. your average 600 will do 0 to 60 in about 3.5 seconds 0 to 100 in about 6
    seconds obviously depending on type of bike
    the sports bikes will go a little quicker than the above the cruisers a
    little slower , however they are all a damn site faster than your Clio

    The 0-60 is probably close but the 0-100 is a bit off I think.

  13. 0 to 100 should have read 30 to 100 typo sorry



    There is only a small difference in 0 to60 times between 600 and1000
    probably less than 1 second though
    This is due entirely to the fact you cannot put all the power down on a
    1000cc sports bike in first gear , well not without performing a humongous
    death defying wheelie of wheelies

    Sports 600s do 0-60 in about 3.5 secs, 0-100 in 8. 1000s do 0-60 in about
    3 and 0-100 in 6. No idea about 30-70, car road tests usually give this
    figure but bike mags don't.

    I'm also 23, no accidents but 6 points. TPFT on a zzr600 (155mph, 0-60 in
    3.5(ish!!)) is £365 (ins group 13).

    That's with no NCB and straight after the direct access test, and I live in
    a reasonably built up area..

    This is with Motorcycle Direct, but ring every single insurer out there, as
    they're all different. I would have preferred a sportier bike but it was a
    hellova lot more££.
