Your ideal cafe?

  1. What he said.

The more you spend on prepared ready meals, the better you get, and you
don't have to spend much to get a very noticeable improvement.

If you think, a lot of the costs are the same whether you're producing
crap or good stuff: cooking, freezing or chilling, packaging, storage
and transport will all be very, very similar. That means that only a
small percentage of the cost is accounted for by ingredients. The
difference bwteeen (say) a £3 ready meal and one costing £3.50 is
    surprising.

Good branded stuff, and *especially* some catering products can be
exceptional. Cheap private label, or "institutional"[1] catering
    products can be appalling.

What I want in a cafe is:

    1) No braindead "music" coming from loud speakers.

    2) Space - also because of the sound-level.

    3) The coffee not being overprized and having names I can't pronounce.

4)I'd love dearly to be able to get an omelet as opposed to the usual
    pastry and sandwiches

    5) Either big windows and a nice view, or at least some interesting
paintings, which don't get boring too fast.

Don't put too much into my ideas as I'm 1) Scandinavian and 2) generally
considered to be out of my mind, so I'm probably not representative of
your average customers - I just felt like chipping in for no obvious
    reason.

    Kind regards,
    Nikitta.

    Good for you.

Unfortunately peanut allergy sufferers can do the full anaphylactic thing by
merely ingesting the airborne oily vapour that emanates from peanuts.

But heh, **** em, it's nature's way of weeding out the weak.

OK - agreed on that one. I've heard tales of an airline asking passengers
not to eat nuts for 24 hours before a flight, because one of the passengers
had a nut allergy. I reckon if it was really that serious, they'd be dead
    already.

  13. I'd never use olive oil for deep frying.

That said, I never have, but I think I'd prefer something with less of a
    strong taste.

I don't see why you shouldn't put milk in coffee, though obviously drinking
latte or cappuccino in the afternoon is definitely not done.

The thing is, the whole *idea* of Starbucks, apart from their rank coffee, is
brilliant. We use the local Starbucks and Coffee Republic as a secondary
    meeting room. All of them are clean, comfortable, pleasant places to be;
they all do nice sandwiches and cakes, most of them have wifi, and if they
don't, there's usually an open access point nearby. It's just that Starbucks
can't do the one thing they're actually supposed to be there for.

I like their chai latte, mind

    On Tue, 24 May 2005 21:37:20 +0100,
More importantly, it has a very low smoking point, so at normal
deep-frying temperatures it's practically burning, which makes it
    taste awful.

My preference is groundnut oil, for deep and shallow frying, as well
as most cooking. EV olive oil is great for _some_ dishes, and salad
dressings, but as you say, is just too strongly-flavoured for many
    uses.
