Z or W Tyre Repair

I've always assumed that the law says that tyre repairs must meet
BS159F and therefore Z or W rated tyres cannot legally be repaired.
This seems logical and makes sense. Whether it's overkill or not is
    another issue.

However, surely the temporary repairs the RAC et al offer are also
illegal since they cannot possibly meet BS159F. Surely you're not
allowed to drive a temporarily unroadworthy vehicle?

So could it be that BS159F is a guideline for the industry rather than
    law?

I'm beginning to wonder if the whole BS159F thing is an excuse to sell
    more tyres.

Illegal or not, I got a W rated tyre repaired the other month.

Nail right through the centre of the tyre.

I had my rear BT020 recently repaired too. Last year, a Dragon Corsa,
    ditto.
    Snap!

"Illegal or not" is my question!

I know bloody well you _can_ repair them and probably perfectly
safely, I want to know if you're allowed to!

I didn't repair it, a tyre place did, so I presume they are allowed to.

I'd guess there's no law against it, but public liability insurance
probably prevents some places doing so... That was certainly the
situation when it came to a local bike parts place making up braided
brake hoses, with the insurance hike for doing so being more than the
profit margin in making a few a year.

This is true BS159F is not a legal requirement hence the confusion. Many
manufacturers believe it is perfectly acceptable to repair these tyres and I
would respect their opinion especially when it goes against their commercial
    interests.

Every new tyre I've bought has needed a repair within the first month. Apart
from the Azaro's which lasted a year but need a repair right now, but I'll
    be changing them instead though.
Yeah, same here and I've never given a repaired tyre a 2nd thought when
    riding.
