Z13 Fuel Filter Snag

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Wicked Uncle Nigel, Apr 27, 2006.

  1. I have this odd snag with the Z13, and any ideas would be welcome.

The filter sits upright, with fuel delivered from the tank into the top,
with the outlet at the bottom into the pump.

The problem is that it looks like it's sucking air in to the filter, and
I can't work out why. It's bad enough to disrupt flow to the engine at
higher throttle openings and cause a slight mis-fire.

I've had problems in the past with the tap being blocked with shite, but
that looks OK and fuel flows well enough from the tap if I disconnect
the filter end. All connections are tight AFAICS.

Is there a bleeding procedure for these things? The Kawasaki Book Of
Half-truths has no mention of such.

  2. Obvious reply - is the filter upside-down? Some of them have arrows
indicating the flow direction, in case you didn't know.

I think it's OK. Is there anything else I should check?

    Which way up is WUN?
Don't worry, as of tonight, there are 4 PCs up and running at chez Gyp,
but it's OK, there's only one Linux box. Actually if we're counting
Linux boxes I guess the Linux broadband router/firewall counts so that's
    5. Does the fact that I check eBay on my mobile make it 6..?

You could try measuring the flow-rate, say by measuring how long it takes to
drain a litre of fuel, with and without the filter. If there's a
significant difference, you could try a bigger filter, or two smaller
    filters in parallel.

Ummm... Insufficient data. Please ask another question.

Got to go see a doctor in the morning.

Don't do doctors, don't do mornings. Bad combination.
Not sure. Which one has the naked pictures of T? An IP address is
    probably enough.

IIRC the Bling-6 has fool-injection. I'm wondering if there's another
filter integral to the system. Perhaps on one of the lower decks, near the
    engine room?

Not according to the book of half-truths. I'll have the crew conduct a

    It gets odder.

Fuel flow from the tank is fine, as is the filter, but there's an
unhealthy head of air stays in the filter that gets sucked down into the
    pump.

I think I'll try priming the filter to fill it, then connecting the
    input hose.

    Fucktifino what's going on.

    Hmm...

I've been blaming the WFO misfire on this. Maybe it's something else?

That second one sounds like a plan. I'll give it a whirl.

It was a new filter fairly recently, thobut.

I can see large air bubbles being sucked into the outlet at higher
throttle settings. Seems to me that they must hit the injectors at some
    point, no?

The mis-fire feels *exactly* like the one that set in when the fuel tank
tap was blocked, and it behaves the same way too (back off a bit, then
    gas it and it's OK).
    I'll do that.
