  1. So, to use Ginge's analogy, you don't expect the UK govt to maintain
and improve roads, including building new roads, because some people
drive 'dodgy' cars (be that stolen, uninsured, unroadworthy,
    unlicensed, whatever)?

Oh and yet again, you're focussing on the UK.

Here in NL, the act dowloading anything other that software is entirely legal.

If you say so. Every implementation I have been inflicted with has been
terrible. And gets worse as the connection gets worse.

VNC is pretty poor as well, though, for anything more than basic admin.

either you don't know what the word "iconoclast" means, or you're
talking about a different Ace from the one I know.

I've had quite a lot of success using vnc to access EDA tools remotely
on slow connections. Saying that, occasionally it is unusable due to the
latency but then the whole internet experience is goosed when your
    connection is that bad.

Although now tend I to use an NX server at the company gateway and
connect using an NX client. You can then run RDP or vnc sessions within
it and this works extremely well, even with very slow connections.

I know a whole bunch of people who travel the world and all work back via
RDC to an Exchange/File server. It works so well for them they refuse any
    technically superior solution.

I have to go kitchen hunting. I'll get it burnt and if I'm down that
way, I'll stick it through your door.

Lets go back to my basic reservations.

People pay (say) £300/y for a "24meg superfast bells and whistles"
    connection.
So for a comparable size leased internet connection BT will charge you
    something like £24,000/y
Obviously something gives somewhere, yes? and the answers are QoS and
    contention.

It would be *much* better if the UK concentrated on providing a high quality
(with SLA) service of (ok I submit) 5Mbps at an affordable price rather than
silly claims that deliver rubbish. And upload speeds more comparable to
download speeds. Also, at that rating the UK can reasonably expect to run
the national backbone networks and international connections free of
congestion. We just cannot provide a true 24meg service to everyone for £25.

In the office here Zen provide me with a reliable 5Mbps down and 0.75Mbps
up. The latter limits me but the former does ok and I download a fair bit
of Very Large File stuff in the evenings. So if I could be provided with 5
down and 2.5+ up at an (effectively) uncontended rate with QoS SLA for the
same money in future I'd be ever so pleased. And if a similar QoS for 24
down and 12 up was available for £50-100 I'd snap it up.

I'm sure all countries have to struggle with the same facts of life.

Really? I have a man to fit it already, so I'm just looking for units.
We'll *probably* be moving next year, so top quality is not quite as
    important as good price.

Well, I didn't use them myself, but only because of several horror
    stories from friends and FoFs.

If they're only doing the supplying, it might be different kettle of
    haddock though.

So did I, and I liked it, apart from the fact it was too big.

    I have an Archos 2 now.[1]

[1] Not great, but *small* and it meant I didn't have to buy an Apple

Ahh. Well FWIW I had no real intention of using them anyway. Ikea,
    Wicks, B+Q maybe Homebase.
